I was totally upset to hear about Susan G. Komen deciding to pull some of their monetary support from Planned Parenthood. The organization sees thousands of women every year that don’t have any other place to go.
I first began going to Planned Parenthood when I was 22. I was no longer covered by my parents insurance, but I wanted to get on birth control. PP offered discounted rates for annual exams and a great price for the patch. It was cheaper there than what I was paying when I had health insurance and went to a pharmacy.
Planned Parenthood is necessary. Some people may be against abortion, and that’s your right. I won’t go into my beliefs, so I really don’t want to hear your opinion on abortion. Planned Parenthood comes down to the fact that they offer services for women based on their ability to pay.
They also make it easy for teenage girls to get birth control. Most parents don’t want to encourage their teens to have sex by giving them birth control. But guess what? They’re doing it anyway. And if that teenager is smart enough to protect themselves, that right should be continued. It’s how you prevent unwanted pregnancies and possible abortions.
Planned Parenthood offers breast cancer screening for women. They made it clear that all money donated from the Komen foundation was solely for breast cancer exams and outreach. Why cut funding because you don’t believe in one thing they do. They are still serving thousands of women daily, not getting abortions, but can’t afford to go anywhere else.
I am proud to say that I am Planned Parenthood patient and would recommend their services to anyone.
